German Police Arrest Suspected Bomber Of Borussia Dortmund’s Team Bus
German police on Friday said it had arrested the suspected bomber of Borussia Dortmund’s team bus. The public prosecutor’s office said the bomber’s motive was financial and not terror-related.
Anti-terror police working on behalf of the federal prosecutor’s office “have arrested a 28-year-old German-Russian national, Sergej W.,” a statement said, indicating the suspect was hoping to profit from a drop in the football team’s share price as a result of the attack.
The perpetrator was was arrested by the elite GSG 9 police unit early on Friday near Tübingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg in south-west Germany.
The suspect had allegedly bought 15,000 put options on Borussia Dortmund shares – reportedly priced at €78,000 (£65,000; $83,600) – betting that they would drop sharply after the attack. He would have profited from this fall.
He was staying at the team’s L’Arrivée hotel in Dortmund on the day of the attack and had moved to a room on the top floor, overlooking the street where it took place, prosecutors say.
The suspect placed the bet on 11 April using an IP address traced to the hotel, after taking out a loan for the money.
It would be recalled that three explosive devices shattered windows and injured a player on the bus last Tuesday evening local time as the German squad was en route to its home Champions League match against AS Monaco. The game was postponed to the next day.
Spanish defender Marc Bartra, 26, suffered injuries to an arm and hand, the team said. Bartra, who has played 29 games in all competitions for Dortmund this season, was treated at the scene and hospitalized.
